Strategies For Raising Funds During a Struggling Economy
by Cynthia Dunbar

In the present economy, giving is down. Most individuals are being very selective when it comes to donating to charitable organizations. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are more than 1.5 million non-profits registered in the United States. Unfortunately during a recession, the need for services increases while revenue generated from donors, fundraising events, individual donors and grants decreases.

Here are five strategies that can assist your organization in continuing to provide exceptional services during a strained economic period.

Commitment:
Success is a group effort. Make sure each member of your organization is knowledgeable and committed to your organization’s purpose, mission, and goals. Highlight your organization’s accomplishments and achievements. Make sure to keep up organization morale.

Evaluation of Projects:
List your current projects/programs. Which projects/programs are successful? Why are these programs successful? What aspect of these programs can be improved? Which program/projects need to be revamped or replaced?

Long-Term Needs Assessment:
Determine what your organization would like to accomplish within the next 3 – 5 years. What kind of programming/projects do you envision your organization working on? Once you have set your long term goals, create a budget. Your budget will allow you figure out how much revenue you will need to generate.

Strategize:
How do you intend to reach your goals? What tools will you need to maintain or improve your current programming? How do you intend to introduce new projects/programs into your organization?

Identify Potential Funding Sources:
Think outside the box - use social media outlets to see what charities celebrities are financing. Do the research - most corporations have a philanthropy division, so look into what they are currently funding. Review your local government budgets - there just may be some dollars set aside for your charity.
