How can I make sure I am ready?
Research
• Find out everything you can about the job and line of business before the interview. Your research will put you in a better position to ask intelligent questions and answer the questions in the context of the job opening. The byproduct of this upfront preparation will be showing your initiative – and impressing the interviewer.
• Talk with people who have worked in similar positions. This will give you an edge on the nature of the job, future potential, and other pertinent details.
• Write out the questions you’ll want to ask about the line of business or department you are interviewing with. Make sure the questions are relevant and thoughtful.
Know Yourself
• Assess your own skills, interests, values, strengths, and weaknesses.
• Have examples of decisions you’ve made and the thought process behind them.
• Identify accomplishments you are proud of, as well as things you might have done
differently - Learning from your mistakes is important.
• Provide examples that demonstrate how you developed your skills.
• Be able to articulate why you are interested in the position and how it fits in with your long-term goals.
Practice
• Meet with a colleague, mentor, or peer to review your interview strategy.
• Participate in a videotaped mock interview, if possible. If not, informally role-play the interview with a trusted colleague or friend.
• Work with a knowledgeable source to review your interview questions.
• Practice your examples in front of a mirror.
