So I’ve been asked to write a music blog. While it’s taken me a while ok..It’s taken me two weeks to get my act together…(the first time is always the roughest) but it looks like I’ve finally found the right motivation or at least the right music to put me in the proper frame of mind.. which is really what this blog is all about….
Welcome to Legend’s Lounge – All Things Urban, Funky and Musical.
Here are the rules…
I write… you read and comment.. we
debate and at the end of it we discover that I’m STILL right LOL.. It’s all a
matter of opinion (I’m entitled to mine and you to yours) that’s just the way
it is.. so there! But seriously this is just one way to provide another
opinionated thought on what affects us to the soul – MUSIC
I’ve been DJing since 9th grade, which
were many moons ago.. ok it was 1982 but I digress and over the course of the
last 20 years..I’ve seen the changes in the music and how it affects us..and I
have to say.. as of today.. I’m NOT all that impressed with the current state
of music, especially on the URBAN side..if there is still such a thing. So a
quick rundown…
Rap (is something you do Hip-Hop is something you live) love that line from
KRS-One and he is right Rap is the music of the culture of Hip-Hop and I think
we have lost sight of that. More importantly Rap has lost all types of focus to
the point where it’s just painful to listen to most of it. I can’t even call
the last good rap album and by good I mean something I could listen to from
start to finish… I mean really out of a 14 track cd is it THAT hard to come up
with at least 6 really good songs? Latest case in point Nicki Minaj
(OVER-RATED) .. Now don’t get me wrong.. She did a BANG up job on her cameos,
which earned her the right to full CD deal.. but holy Non-Talent Batman … Pink
Friday was a bomb and NOT in the Hip-Hop bomb is good way… Which is pretty much
my point.. there are so many folks who consider themselves rappers that the
talent pool is as diluted as the NBA (ouch), which means that people who drop
great verses are all of a suddenly made superstars before taking a snap (the
NFL is BACK baby) but you get my point. Please make it stop and let’s get back
to the real talent in Hip-Hop and the story telling (man can’t live on the same
questionable downbeats) .. Moving On
R&B…where have you gone R&B?
oddly enough the same route as rap (how sad is that?) .. Wait.. I just realized
that this has become a real downer of a piece…but it is what it is.. and in the
coming weeks.. we are most certainly gonna turn up some grooves and gems but I
digress) R&B has been in steady decline since we let producers take over
from the creative process of artistry. More importantly we have lost the soul
of R&B when folks forgot or have never learned how to actually WRITE a good
song. Enter R. Kelly.. for all his personal sidebars that man KNOWS how to
write a song (we’ll talk about the entertainment later). Songwriting is the key
in R&B and back in the day… it was clear.. there were performers and
songwriters and they didn’t necessarily have to be the same. But now we have a
bunch of folks who want to be performers but can’t write a lick…more
importantly most of them can’t sing a lick either.. (again I digress) So we get
what we get. Again.. not saying the genre is dead but it’s
fading..We gotta bring it back..and I know there’s some talent out there such
as my girl Mayisha and Eric Roberson, both of whom are supremely talented..
Moving On…
I’m going to be real upfront about
this.. I LOVE HOUSE MUSIC…it’s the LAST of the freeform music where you can
just sit back, dance and let it all gowithout worries. The real problem is
nobody wants to dance like that anymore! Been to a ton of parties where there
is NOT enough people getting it in! Who’s gonna take the weight for that? The
Crowd? The promoters? Or the >>>> DJ? (I might have to talk about
that in detail next time).
I'm gonna wrap this puppy up.. with this
review...
Until I return.. Positive, Peace and Love…See you next time inside Legend’s Lounge
MaryJ. Blige- 25/8- Geffen
The Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul Mary J. Blige is back with 25/8 professing that there just isn’t enough time or days for her to show her love, hence 25/8. Not a new theme, but, the concept of 25/8 I do like, and the track is musically superior with a nice flow. Plus, Mary has strong vocals that compliment. Now this has no place on the dance floor but, chilling with your lady in The Lounge…it’s a winner!
